MINI TWISTER TABLE TOPPERS

When my hubby and I were in Colorado, I got to shop at a local quilt shop where I found the Primitive Gatherings Pinwheel tool. It is a smaller version of the Lil' Twister tool that is used with 5 inch charm squares. This one uses 3 1/2" squares and was so much fun to make. The fabric is some that was left over from my Winter House quilt. I wanted to try something a little different with this twister by sewing matching colors in a row (alternating light and dark) to see how that would work with this tool...I love how it came out! To start, I cut 30 squares and sewed them together in rows and then added the 2 1/4" border, your quilt top is now approximately 19" x 21 1/2". You then use the pinwheel tool and cut these so your quilt reduces in size to 13" x 15 1/2" before you sew them together. Once sewn (and before binding) your quilt is a cute 10 3/4" x 12 1/2". You can see in the third picture the difference in size. If you like working with very small pieces, you can save the scraps and use them for another project. I quilted this by straight stitching along the pinwheels as you can see in the second picture. The first picture is to show how it looks on one of my end tables to give you an idea of the actual size. If you add an additional border you can use these as placemats or how cute would they be as 'doll quilts' for little girls? I really enjoyed making these (I made one for each table) and look forward to using this tool again. As a side note, they also have an even smaller tool called the "Itty Bitty" which makes a 10" square...bought that one as well and can't wait to use it.

VALENTINE'S HEART WALL HANGING

I don't usually decorate for Valentine's Day but wanted to create a little something to put on the new hanger I recently purchased (it holds a 12 inch block). It was simple enough to figure out that I would need eight half square triangle blocks and eight squares (six of the design fabric and two solid white) to make a heart. While looking through my fabric stash, I found a quarter yard of fabric that I got from my daughter (she bought it a long time ago to make some fun project but decided she wouldn't have time as she's extremely busy with her hand crafted jewelry business). The colors were right for my heart block, however, the design is (I'm guessing) Superwoman so I carefully fussy cut as much as I could but you can see in the lower right corner part of the 'S'. I used the rest of the fabric to make hanging tabs and pieced the back. To quilt it I straight stitched 1/4" around the inside of the heart, along the outside edge and outside the heart block. This could easily be made larger to use as a place mat by adding larger borders; as a mug rug or with extra batting as a potholder.

THREAD CATCHERS aka BOBBIN HOLDERS

After purchasing these cute 'sewing motif' fabrics on sale (60% off...woo hoo!) at a local quilt store, I couldn't wait to start creating some items for my 'sewing room' (which magically..thanks to our wall bed.. transforms back into our guest room when needed). I found this cute tutorial for a 'thread catcher' here (thanks Edna!!!) but after making them (one for me and one for my quilting buddy) I decided it would be perfect for storing my empty bobbins rather than for 'catching my threads'. My quilting buddy loves hers and plans on using it the same way. So now I think a mug rug is in order.....just have to decide how I want to make it.

ZION NATIONAL PARK TABLE TOPPER/WALL HANGING

A couple of months ago while visiting Zion National Park (my favorite of all the NP's we've been to so far), I happened to see several great fabric quilt block sets for sale in the gift shop. They come with a pattern and so I decided it would be fun to make a table topper/wall hanging. I took the blocks to one of my local quilt shops to find some batiks that I could use with them. Early Wednesday evening, after playing golf, I decided I was going to start this project, but wait to finish it on Thursday.....didn't happen....cut everything out....went out for dinner...continued working on it and stayed up late to get the top done, backing and batting cut, all pinned (using my new Pinmoors that I just love!!!) and binding ready. I wasn't sure how I was going to quilt it, so I had to set it aside on Thursday. After a fun day out with my hubby, I took another look at it and knew that stitch-in-the-ditch was going to be perfect for this, along with stitching a large 'X' in the corner nine-patch blocks. MY FINISHED WINTER HOUSE QUILT

I did it!!! I finished my Winter House quilt a few days ago and am soooooooo happy with it!!! The pics above show where we 'pinned' it to the wall above the table that holds the matching runner. The third pic is the back of the quilt tossed over my quilt rack (with one my rag quilts 'peeking' out from underneath lol!!!) I pieced the back using another fabric from the same line (love the little red birds) that I found on the internet and used the house block as my label so I'd have a place to 'record' all the info about it. I quilted clouds and smoke from the chimneys, squares inside the tree fabric along with free hand hearts; 'x'd' the doors and windows and did connecting circles with hearts in the corners on the border. The binding is a red 'snow' fabric I purchased from the same line for a little 'pop' of color. I'm sorry I forgot to mention in previous posts that the pattern is called Snow Days by Janet Locey. Now off to work on some smaller projects!

CIRCLES IN SQUARES TABLE TOPPER

A while back I started work on what was to be my first quilt, however, it was put aside to make way for all of my holiday projects, etc. When I finally took the blocks out a couple of days ago, I decided I no longer wanted to make them into a quilt. After playing around with them, I decided to use these nine as a table topper. As you can see, I cut circles out of four layer cake blocks and then stitched the circles to a creamy print 10 inch background block; and, then the blocks (with the circles cut out) were stitched on top of matching creamy print blocks. I used a blanket stitch on all of them and did it so they would fray a little bit after washing. When I saw Connie's (Quilting by the River) spiral quilting, I thought that would be fun to try on the circles (thanks for the inspiration Connie!!). I decided to create a 'flower' in the center block by stitching an 'X' first and then curvy lines for petals and lots of spiral stitching for a great big center ...the center is partially hidden in the top picture under my pottery but the petals show...and the second picture shows the full flower. I still have many blocks left and just have to decide what I'd like to use them for. The layer cake I used is Collections For A Cause - Hope by Howard Marcus for Moda and the creamy fabric is Perennials by Kansas Troubles Quilters for Moda.

QUILTED WINTER RUNNER

I finally got back to my Winter runner project after making some gifts for my daughter. To finish this, I used the 'envelope' method and then quilted it using straight lines on the larger border; a square in each tree block; and for the house I did 'x's in the windows and door, scallops on the roof, 'smoke' coming out of the chimneys and a cloud. I love how it came out and can't wait to finish the quilt (the back is done...have to cut the batting and then, hopefully, quilt it....I decided to do it myself, rather than send it out....so please wish me luck!). First, however, I will finish a smaller project I started yesterday...which will give me some quilting practice.

EASY QUILTED EYEGLASS CASE

Before I mailed the scarf and quilted bag to my daughter that I previously posted about, I decided to make a quilted eyeglass case for her after seeing this super easy tutorial (thanks Karen at Sew Many Ways) here (and just finding out from her that she now has to wear glasses for the first time....all that close up work for her jewelry designing and the fact that she's getting older LOL!!!) I chose two of the fabrics used for her bag and had this project done in a very short time...it's that easy!!! The case is reversible (see second pic...you can have the quilted side on the inside by pushing it into the fabric side if you choose...I prefer it on the outside). The third pic is just to show the size in relation to the bag I made..the eyeglass case fits inside this with lots of room for other "stuff". I plan on making more of these using bright color fabrics for all the 'readers' (those are mine in the pics) I have all over the house so I can see where I left them....my daughter is not the only one getting older LOL!!! BTW...my daughter called today when the package arrived and said she loved all her quilted gifties :o)

HANDMADE QUILT RACK

This is the beautifully handmade quilt rack that my quilting buddy's talented woodworking hubby built for me. It is made from solid walnut and I just love how it looks (it's not wonky...that's caused by the angle I took the picture from)! The quilt hanging on it is actually one I purchased last year (before I started learning how to quilt) from a local quilt shop (it had been a store sample and the price was so low that I couldn't resist!). I'm so happy I'll now have a place to display my quilts...when they are not being used to keep us warm.

I wanted to make something special to put the scarf I just made for my daughter in before I mail it to her and found this great tutorial at A Quilting Life (thanks Sherri!!). Instead of making one, I figured it would be just as easy to make two at one time so I'd have an extra for myself or to use for another gift. They are really easy to do and I know that I'll be making more (finished size is 7 1/2"wide x 8 1/2" tall x 3" deep). I made the outside of the bags using fabric left over from the scarf; and the inside fabric (bottom photo) is Fandango by Kate Spain for Moda...got it on clearance at one of my LQS. I did stitch-in-the-ditch quilting for the patchwork fronts. The back on one is quilted on an angle (third picture) and the other is straight line quilting. The ties are twill tape cotton ribbon from Stampin' Up (on clearance as well) from my paper crafting stash.

QUILTED SCARF

My daughter asked if I would make her a scarf from the fabric she chose (Restoration by CP designs for Studio e fabrics) while visiting us a few months ago (they were supposed to be for a purse but she decided she really wanted a scarf). So I went back to the fabric store and chose this pretty textured blue Minkee fabric to go with the others she had picked out. I'd never worked with Minkee before, but I love how it feels and looks (the second pic shows how it matches the blue in the print fabric and you can see that I only quilted around the print fabrics and not the Minkee since I love how 'poofy' it looks on its own). I didn't follow a pattern for this....just 'winged' it... and I'm so happy how it turned out!! The finished size is approximately 80" long by 4" wide. I'll send it to her after I make a little something extra to go with it...perhaps a small purse :o)

WINTER HOUSE QUILT & RUNNER

A few days ago I posted a 'sneak peek' at what I was working on and here are the tops for my Winter House quilt and matching runner. Now this started out as just a quilt project; but, while stitching the quilt top together I decided I wanted the quilt to be square since I plan on hanging it on the wall. That left me one row for a runner which will go on the table shown in the pic above. I used the red chimney fabric as a small border on the runner to make the houses 'pop' and love how that looks. I didn't get to finish these as I started on, and completed, another project (which I'll show pics of soon). I still have to decide how I'm going to do the back (solid fabric or pieced...not sure yet) and whether I will attempt to quilt the top myself or send it out...decisions, decisions!!!

SNEAK PEEK & A VIEW

Just wanted to show a 'sneak peek' at what I've been working on over the past few days (in between golf and housework) along with a picture I took at Zion National Park on our Sunday drive (look at that blue sky...not enhanced with Photoshop...it's that blue and clear!!..love this place!!!). The top photo shows all the little pieces of fabric I cut (close to 500 total after I got done with some of those larger pieces and the borders) and the middle photo shows a peek at a few of these sewn together. I'll have better pics when it's all done.

MINI FABRIC GIFT BAGS

I've been having so much fun trying out new sewing and quilting techniques and projects; so, after finding a tutorial here for these adorable little fabric gift bags I just had to make some (the designer is Monica Solorio-Snow). I used leftover fabric from my owl pot holders that I recently posted and some ribbon from my stash. I took two of these pictures with some of my talented daughter's handcrafted jewelry to show the size of the bags (they measure approximately 4" x 4" x 2") and how the inside of these bags are lined. The other picture shows one filled with twine and the other with a gift card with candy...so they are great for so many gift giving ideas..and these are 'bags' that the recipient will want to keep! I plan on making more to have on hand for birthdays and holidays (think how adorable they will look made with Easter, Halloween, Christmas fabrics etc!!!!!).

GAME ON!! BIRTHDAY CARD

Our oldest son's birthday is later this month and I wanted to make a special card for him. I couldn't resist making this game controller from the Father's Day Cricut cartridge since he enjoys playing video games. It's actually attached with a Wobbles spring so it moves back and forth. The design paper is from Best Occasions Prismatic Paper Pack (Walmart). (It's hard to take a good picture since it is sooooo reflective). I love using it for masculine cards..this way I still can add the 'bling' I like to use on cards without it being 'girly' looking.

OWL POTHOLDERS

FIRST COMPLETED PROJECT IN 2012 - BATIK RAG BAG

2012 is off to a good start since I was able to complete the rag bag I started for one of my daughter-in-laws using these very colorful batiks. She requested that the strap be long enough to wear across her body so she can be 'hands-free' while they go for long walks..especially with the new puppy. I'll be shipping it to her later this week...hope she likes it!

LAST OF THE CHRISTMAS PROJECTS FOR 2011

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! We enjoyed a quiet day and some golf (the course closest to our home was open...and free...so we decided it would be fun to play!). Here are the last two Christmas projects I finished (just in time LOL) with, yet again, some Fruitcake fabric! The coasters are from leftover scraps of fabric. The runner started with some leftovers as well and then used more of the charm squares I had along with white Kona fabric for the border. I used red thread on top and green in the bobbin for quilting the runner and had fun using some decorative stitches on the border as well. The back of the runner is brown and the green stitches look so nice that it can be used on either side....love that it is reversible!!! Off to go fabric shopping now with a friend and then have to decide whether to start another project or golf....decisions, decisions!!!

QUILTED GIFT SET

This is a gift set I made for a friend, and fellow quilter for Christmas. I found a tutorial for the cute fabric basket at the Pink Penguin and decided it would make a fun gift for my friend to use in her sewing room. I used the same fabrics (aren't they adorable?!) for the pin cushion and matching coaster. All the quilting was done before I assembled each item. The 'stuffing' for the pin cushion was made from lots of leftover batting (I always save my scraps for this purpose). I purchased a bunch of bobbins for her sewing machine since I knew she needed more and then made a small 'raw-edge' drawstring fabric bag to put them in. There will be some other goodies added to this before I give it to her tomorrow, but I needed to take some pics before packing it up. Hope she likes it!

A SPECIAL WALL HANGING

If you wonder why I titled this 'A Special Wall Hanging' it's because that's how I feel about it LOL!! It started with the little metal and wooden hangers my friend and I found on clearance for $1.00 each. She recently made a wall hanging for hers and, after showing it to me, I decided I needed to give it a try (even though she said she would make me one..wasn't that so sweet of her?!). It's special because it has the very first 'star' block I ever made and first 'house' block, too! The star, house and picket fence patterns come from a Thimbleberries book. I used her wall hanging to figure out what sizes I needed for the 9 patch blocks, borders, hanging loops and prairie points. I also had to figure out how to add the hanging loops and prairie points on my own since I never made anything like this and she is out of town at the moment. I quilted this using a variegated brown thread in the bobbin and on some dark areas on top; switched to a cream color thread for the top but kept the variegated brown thread in the bobbin since the backing is dark brown. In addition to some straight line quilting, in the closeup pic you can see the 'scalloped roof shingles' and smoke coming out of the 'chimney' that I free motion quilted..so much fun to do!! Even though I used (once again) leftover Fruitcake fabric that is a Christmas line (along with a fat quarter I purchased to go with it...not sure what line that is from), it doesn't look like a Christmas wall hanging so I can leave it up year round...and I plan on doing so since I love it and am so proud of it!

CHRISTMAS TREE MUG RUG

I made this Christmas tree mug rug as part of a gift for one of my friends. I got the tutorial from Connie, of Quilting By The River. She has some great quilting tutorials on her blog and her projects are always so pretty (so, thanks Connie for all your inspiration). This was not only fun to make, but challenging as well since I used a directional fabric (the snowmen) and you have to be very careful when making your HSTs that the design is going in the right direction. I quilted the right side with small loop-de-loops; outlined each section of the tree and trunk and then added a few snowflakes above and below the tree. I decided to sew my 2 1/4" binding (Connie used 2 1/2", but I prefer this size) onto the back and then brought it to the front; holding it down with a decorative stitch. I really like how this came out and have already cut out a few more that I'll make after I'm done with a couple of other projects I've started.

CHRISTMAS HOT PADS

I wanted to make a little something to add to the gifts we are sending to our children for Christmas (hope they don't peek!). I came across this great You Tube video showing how to make easy pot holders. I decided to make them smaller than she showed on the video (hers are 10"...mine are 8" unfinished) because I thought they would be useful as hot pads. This fabric is called Ready, Set, Snow and I thought is would be perfect for Christmas and everyday, too, since these four prints don't scream "Christmas". To help make it 'heat resistant' you use a special insulated lining...I used 'Insul-Bright', which can be found at Joann's. I like how they came out so I'm planning on making more.

THIS YEAR'S CHRISTMAS CARD

I procrastinated about making our Christmas cards this year because I was having so much fun quilting, golfing, etc. My craft studio did not get much use because of this and I almost decided to go with store bought cards..GASP!...but couldn't do it!). I did, however, decide to make them as simple as possible so they would arrive for this year's Christmas. When I say simple, it means I don't spend an hour or more on each card....but it doesn't mean these only took a few minutes to create. I love PTI products, however, using their dies means only getting one cut for each run through the die cutting machine and then lining up their stamps with their die cuts takes time to get them right so you don't have to go back and cut out more (ask me how I know). To make the cards I first stamped my sentiment in the upper left hand corner of a 4"x 5 1/4" piece of white cs and then ran the paper through the Cuttlebug with the embossing folder. Next I die cut the cups and candy canes and stamped each one; slipped the candy canes into the cut at the top of each cup and set aside. I used a scallop punch to make the 'coasters' to set my cups on and adhered them to the back of the cups and onto the embossed mats. The completed mats were then attached to the front of the white A2 size cards I made. I also stamped a 'Merry Christmas' sentiment inside each card and my personal name stamp on the back. Mailed them this morning and now I can get back to other projects I have been working on, and; when the weather permits, back onto the golf course. Products used: white cs; dp from Cosmo Cricket Jolly by Golly; PTI stamps and dies; Distress inks; Cuttlebug and Candy Cane Stripe embossing folder; scallop punch.

CHRISTMAS TABLE TOPPERS

As you know, if you've been reading my previous posts, I have been working on Christmas projects for our home. These are the small table toppers I made to go with the placemats and runner I previously posted about. I, once again, used the Fruitcake line of fabric (yes, I bought lots of it because I just love the patterns and colors). As you can see, our teak end tables have a 'triangle' shape to them so I had to decide what 'shape' I wanted to make the table toppers....decided on squares because I plan on making some coasters to match. What I love most about these toppers is the quilting I did. If you click on the top picture you can see that I did large and small loops in the center and a smaller version on the sides and tops. For the rest of the topper I did small loop-de-loops with stars (another first for me). Did I say how much I love quilting?...sure I did, but had to say it again!!! By the way, that amazing lamp was handmade by our very talented neighbor, who is now working on a quilt rack for me....woo hoo!!!!

CHRISTMAS TABLE RUNNER

Been keeping real busy with quilting Christmas projects for our home (in between golf games and ~~shopping~~ visiting quilt shops). Above you can see the table runner I made using a Fruitcake charm square pack. I decided to do an easy runner since I cover some of it with the small Christmas tree and a few other decorations (it was sooooo hard not to put more on top but I did want the runner to show LOL!). I did a quilt-as-you-go method and then used a 'lock stitch' feature on my Janome in the center of each block. Now off to work on some more projects...Christmas is just around the corner!

CHRISTMAS PLACEMATS

We returned last week after visiting our children and their spouses for Thanksgiving (along with our grandpuppies and grandkitties)...had a wonderful time!!! Everyone loved their quilted gifts and are looking forward to more...so happy, since I just love quilting!!! In fact, here are the latest Christmas placemats I made for our home. These were so much fun to do...I used strips from a jellyroll called Fruitcake (last year's pattern) and divided them into two color groups as you can see from the pics. I decided to do a loop-de-loop free motion quilt design on them (used different color threads for the tops and also in the bobbins to match the backing fabrics) ....still practicing and having a great time doing so. Now off to finish a table runner so I can decorate for Christmas.

RAG PURSE FOR MY DAUGHTER

I recently posted the flannel rag purse I created with the flannel scraps from my good friend's stash. I wanted to make one of these purses for my daughter, however, I decided to use some cotton quilting fabric I purchased with kitty cat motifs for the front and a cotton fabric I purchased from the clearance section of one of my local quilt shops instead of using flannel. It came out sew, sew cute!!! I fussy-cut the squares so that the kitties weren't cut off when sewn; added a label and velcro closure.

I hope my daughter will have fun using this when she goes shopping for jewelry supplies for her business. She creates beautiful jewelry using her handmade beads (or if you like to make your own jewelry, she sells her beads so you can incorporate them into your own designs). LIL' TWISTER FALL TABLE RUNNERS

I spent many hours (over several days) working on three Lil' Twister Fall Table Runners as gifts for my three grown children and their spouses. (We are going to be visiting with them over the Thanksgiving week and I wanted to create something special for them). These great fabrics were purchased when my daughter was visiting (I was planning on using them to make some Fall projects for my home at the time....but, as we know, plans change!). One of my favorite new tools is the Lil' Twister tool that I used for a Halloween table topper that I previously posted. My original plan was to make some pot holders or hot pads with the blocks; but, after creating several of the blocks, I decided they would look really nice as table runners...I even did the free motion quilting by myself, made some labels, and I think they came out great!!! Guess we will have to wait till next year for me to sew some Fall items for our home (Christmas quilt projects are on my list next)...and I haven't even started working on my Christmas cards....where does the time go????

FUN RAG PURSE

When my daughter was visiting, we went shopping for fabric with my good friend and quilting buddy. While looking at all the yummy fabrics, we found a purse pattern that we thought would be fun to make. My friend has a large stash of flannel scraps from projects she has created over a number of years and decided to share them with me so we could make 'matching' rag purses. I ironed all the fabric scraps and she cut them into 5" squares. We split them up and I started on my purse as soon as I got home (she lives next door so that was a very quick trip lol!!!). Just like a rag quilt, once it is washed, it is sooooooo soft. This was such a fun project and one I plan I using again soon!

QUILTED RUNNER FOR MY 'GRANDKITTIES'

My daughter and son-in-law recently bought their first home. The living room has a large bay window where my 'grandkitties' love to sit and watch what is happening in their new neighborhood. I thought it would be fun to make them a 'quilt' of their own to sit on in that window and this is what I came up with. I found these adorable cat and mice fabrics online and decided they would be perfect for this project (see the closeup pic above). Even though this runner is large, (25"x58"), I decided to use an 'envelope' method to create it so I wouldn't have to add a separate binding and to make it reversible. After sewing the layers and turning it right-side out I stitched around the edge 1/4" (which also closed the opening I left for turning). Next I sewed around again an inch in from that seam. I had to piece the fabrics to get the length I needed and so for the quilting I did a stitch-in-the-ditch in each seam line and again about 2 inches on either side of the seams. This left me with three good sized areas to do some stippling (since I'm still learning it was a great way to get in some more practice). A good friend's church is going to be having a bazaar in a couple of weeks and a couple of ladies are making pillowcases to sell, so I offered to make some to donate. After shopping for some fun fabrics together, I found an easy-to-follow tutorial on You Tube (click here) and then had fun making these. Not only will these make great gifts, but you could use them to 'wrap' a gift inside by tying a ribbon around it. (...think...new pajamas and socks inside for the 'Night Before Christmas' with a new pillowcase to sleep on while waiting for Santa to visit....awwwww!). Plus, it saves on wrapping paper, tape, etc. and becomes part of the gift. If you make any, I'd love to see a pic.

MONOCHROMATIC WEDDING CARD

Friends have a family wedding to attend later this month and I offered to create a card for them to give. I thought it would be fun to do a white monochromatic look. I used Ranger watermark resist ink to stamp some branches and the word 'Love' onto a piece of white cardstock. The heat embossing powder I chose is Polysparkle from Ranger (I've had it for a very long time). I like that it is not just plain white. It has tiny colored sparkles blended in that show up when you move the card around. (pic taken in the evening so the lighting is not good..sorry). I used my Corner Chomper on two of the corners and added some Hug Snug seam binding that I tied in a bow on the opposite side. To complete the card, I added some 'pearls' on top of the seam binding and stamped a sentiment on the inside. The stamps I used are from 'my cute stamps'.

I just finished a quilt for my daughter (my biggest quilting project to date) which uses a vintage sheet that was owned (and well used) by her Great Aunt as the main fabric for the blocks as well as the back of the quilt. When my daughter and son-in-law were visiting in September we went shopping for quilt fabrics to match. We were able to find some yardage and some really pretty batiks that compliment the colors in the sheet. I decided to highlight some of the 'sheet' squares by adding dark green in the corners (snowball blocks..you can see one in the pic above with the label) and I'm so happy I did. After I was done measuring, cutting, stitching and getting my quilt 'sandwich' ready, my dear friend, Betty, did the stippling for me (which I really, really appreciate since this is not a small quilt). I then spent many hours yesterday attaching the binding and hand stitching it to the back. I made a label using some leftover fabric from the quilt and one of the decorative alphabets on my amazing Janome sewing machine. I decided to throw it into the washing machine to see how it would look and I love it!!! I actually think it looks even better with all it's 'quilty wrinkles'...can't wait to give it to my daughter when we go for a visit (but until then I think I will just enjoy having it on the back of my sofa). BTW, the model above is my dear hubby (well, just his big hands and feet, lol!!)

QUILTED HALLOWEEN PLACEMATS

After practicing stippling on my Halloween mug rugs (seen in the pic above), I decided it was time to work on the matching placemats. I finished four (of eight) so that we'd have some before Halloween arrives in a few days. I did all the stippling in the center (with varigated thread) and 'loop de loops' (with black thread) on the black border....love how they came out!!! My free motion quilting is getting better the more I practice (but I'm sure not ready for a large quilt just yet). I decided to do a self-binding using the backing fabric and a decorative stitch to sew it down. My next project is to sew the binding onto a large quilt I made for my daughter (that my dear friend, Betty, stippled for me). Of course that has to be fit in between golfing, hiking, target shooting and a little cardmaking....sooooo much to do....soooooo little time LOL!!

My good friend, and quilting buddy Betty, made me this absolutely beautiful quilted Christmas table topper and mug rugs set for my birthday!!! I love star blocks (but haven't tried making them yet) so I was thrilled when I opened my present and found this set. She personalized it on the back with this cute label using her new Janome sewing machine (the same one I also purchased...and love so much!!!). I already made placemats in matching fabric (we shop together and have very similar taste) so I can't wait to start decorating with these.

MY HALLOWEEN MUG RUGS & PIN CUSHION

I've been promising my quilting friend, and myself as well, that I would try stippling (free motion quilting). Since I didn't want to ruin a large project, I decided to use leftover fabrics from that fun Lil' Twister quilt I just posted about to make four Halloween mug rugs. The bindings were also made from leftover strips that I sewed together so each one of the mug rugs has a couple of different designs. Now that adorable little pin cushion is made from tiny triangles of fabric from the same quilt that first found their way into my garbage can. I didn't think they were good for anything but changed my mind (pulled them out of the garbage can...which is in my sewing room so there wasn't anything yukky in there with them LOL!!). It is stuffed with leftover batting strips cut into small pieces. I enjoyed my first attempt at stippling (no laughing allowed please) and I'm happy with the result. I do intend to keep practicing (I have eight Halloween placemats to be done) so I'm sure I'll improve as I continue. Now I'm off to make a cup of tea and put one of those new mug rugs to good use!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN 'BOO~THDAY' CARD

I have a very good friend whose birthday is on Halloween (in fact, both of her children were also born on Halloween....spooky LOL!!!). So, I decided to make her a birthday card with a Halloween theme. I used my Sizzix Big Kick and Halloween pumpkin dies; dp from Cosmo Cricket Matilda mini deck; PTI Fresh Snow ink and Memento Tuxedo black dye ink around the edges; teeny tiny pom pom trim from the fabric store. The sentiment on the front, as well as the cute little ghost on the back, is from the Sizzix Spooky Fun stamp set. I also wanted to show one of the many personalized stamps I use on the back of my cards. I ordered most of them, and received others as gifts, from Paper Angel stamps (this one I've had for many years). My friend's name and my message on the inside are blocked out for privacy.

LIL' TWISTER HALLOWEEN TABLE TOPPER

When shopping at one of my local quilt shops, I purchased a kit that was to be used with a new tool called the 'Lil' Twister'....so, of course, I had to purchase that as well. I wanted to 'test' this tool before using this cute kit so I decided to use Halloween fat quarters (previously mentioned in my last post) and some leftover fabric in my stash to see how this gadget worked. It was soooooooo easy, and fun, to use!!! First, you sew your 5" squares together (you can use a charm pack or cut your own like I did from the fat quarters); add a 3" border and then you have to cut it all apart using the Lil' Twister tool and rotary cutter.....yes, you read that right....you sew your squares and border together only to cut it all apart and sew it back together...but you get the cutest look when you are done!!! I added two more borders to get the size I wanted (my good friend, Betty, did the stippling on this one, too). Rather than add a binding, I decided to self-bind with the backing fabric and sewed it in place with a decorative stitch on my new Janome sewing machine. I just love how this came out and I'm already planning other projects using this tool. I also purchased the larger one that can be used with layer cakes (10" squares) and found two smaller twister tools in a quilt shop on our recent trip to Colorado that use 2 1/2" and 3 1/2" squares....oh the possibilities!!!!

HALLOWEEN PLACEMATS

When looking through my fabric stash, I came across a Halloween fat quarter with cats (it came with five other assorted Halloween prints in a pack for $6.00 at a quilt show I attended...yes, one dollar each..woo hoo!). I thought my daughter and son-in-law would like some Halloween placemats for their new home (they have two cats...aka my 'grand-kitties' lol) and this is what I came up with. The other fabrics I used are solid black Kona for the inside border and binding; Ghastlies for the outer border and Riley Blake for the back. The thread is variegated in Halloween colors and looks amazing in real life!! My good friend/quilter, Betty, offered to do the stippling on these. (I'll be practicing free motion quilting on the placemats I am presently working on...this is my next step in learning to quilt...can't always do stitch-in-the-ditch..so practice I shall).

REVERSIBLE PURSE

Just got back from another RV adventure with my hubby (lots of driving, sightseeing, golfing and fun!!). Want to share this purse I made; it was a 'practice' project for me since I never made one before. I found a pattern in one of my quilt magazines and used some fabric I purchased, very inexpensively, to be used as backing for future quilt projects. This purse is reversible but I chose to add a snap as I prefer the outside fabric. I'll use it to carry samples of fabrics I want to match when shopping instead of the ziploc bag I've been using lol!!! Now that I know how easy it is to create one of these I'll be making one for my daughter using some fun fabrics I ordered while she was visiting.

A SIMPLE ANNIVERSARY CARD

I'm trying really hard to create simple and easy-to-make cards since we are so busy and this one was just that. The inspiration was the leftover punched piece of Basic Grey Curio paper along with two other designs from the same pad. I stamped the sentiment from SU onto white cardstock to fit the punched opening. The other white paper is a scrap from the birthday card I just made after running the PTI Just The Ticket die through my Cuttlebug. I really liked the shape so I inked the edges and added some bling. Other products used: kraft cs, scallop edge punch and SU dimensionals.

Sorry I haven't been posting lately but we've been sooooo busy that there really hasn't been time. (Serious elder care issue with my hubby's 95 year old aunt that required us to catch a flight back East to take care of things and; on a happier note, a week's visit with our daughter and son-in-law back at our home a few days later). We've also been playing lots and lots of golf since I started three months ago.

I've posted two pics (you can click on them to make them bigger)...the first is one taken a few days ago at Zion National Park when the kids were visiting...loved how that cloud looked behind the rock formation; and the second is a picture of the golf course we played in Nevada yesterday with our friends (the ladies tee box is off to the left in the picture)....it was a difficult course and about 102 degrees out...but lots of fun!!

'TUMBLER' RUNNER

This is the tumbler design runner I have been working on (actually on and off) for the past week or two. The cherry patterned fabric is from a free fat quarter I got from my local quilt shop; the dark red is left over from other projects and the binding is from another fat quarter. The backing fabric is from the 'end of bolt' I purchased for $5.00 (there were over 6 yards left on this bolt....what a deal!!!!). As you can see from the back, I quilted this by outlining each of the tumblers. I have so many more projects lined up to do...just have to find the time to work on them.

A friend gave us two jars of her homemade plum jam (yummy!!) and so to thank her for this kind gesture I made a set of 'all occasion' cards for her. Each of the six cards are different, so I've decided to post two at a time to make it easier to view. These are the first two along with how I packaged them for her. I'm not going to list all of the products used...only because I didn't keep track of them as I created each of the cards (sorry...me bad!!!).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Y'ALL!!!

We have friends of all ages and one of them is going to turn 80 years old this weekend. We've been invited to his birthday celebration and, of course, I just had to make him a special card (he was born and raised in Georgia...the reason for this sentiment). I'm not showing the inside since I've already filled it out with a special message (and forgot to take a pic before I did...oops!), however, the part that goes with the sentiment on the front is....Happy Birthday Y'All...Sit back, relax and enjoy your special day! The recliner chair on the front is attached with a Wobbles and so it rocks back and forth. The cut is from the Cricut Father's Day cartridge that I just purchased. I bought it because it has masculine cuts that aren't childlike (although some can be used for children). Other products used: kraft cs for card base; green cs run through the Cuttlebug with the Argyle embossing folder; beige cs with 'leather look' from stash; small piece of black cs; Ranger Distress inks; computer generated sentiment.

Lily Pad Cards Sketch Challenge

While playing with some of my new craft goodies from my recent 'haul' I saw that Lily Pad Cards was having a sketch challenge and decided it would be fun to play along. I used another flower I created with my Tim Holtz Tattered Florals die and kraft glassine paper (after stamping it with a swirl stamp from my stash). I attached the flower layers to two muslin flowers I had left over from a previous project with a rhinestone brad. I inked around the edge with a Copic marker and 'dyed' two cream Melissa Frances pearls with a Copic marker as well. The design paper is from Cosmo Cricket. I removed two corners with my kraft knife and then cut two scraps of white cs to place behind them after running them through the Cuttlebug with the Swiss Dots embossing folder. I got to use one of my new Nesties Lacy Ovals die under the flower (it was also embossed with the Swiss Dots folder). The sentiment is from Taylored Expressions, along with the matching die. I cut out two so I could layer them using SU dimensionals. It was fun blending new products with left over items!

I couldn't wait to start using some of the new goodies from my recent 'craft haul' that I posted about. The flower was made by stamping a sheet of the Tim Holtz kraft glassine paper with a swirl stamp and Staz-on black archival ink; to set it on this glassine paper I used my heat gun...and no smears. I cut out the flower shapes with my Vagabond and Tim Holtz Tattered Florals die; scrunched them up and attached three layers with a blue rhinestone brad (I used one of the Tim Holtz Reinforcers behind the brad for a little extra color). Next I tried one of my new Fancy Tags Two Nesties; inked it with Tumbled Glass Distress ink and then attached it to a piece of 7 Gypsies avignon dp. The kraft glassine paper does not take real well to adhesives so I used the brad to attach it to the center of the tag. After attaching the flower, tag and dp to the front of the card I added some shabby wrinkled ribbon using Scor-tape. The sentiment is from PTI Mat Stack 1 Collection; a couple of rhinestones and my card is done. Can't wait to play with more of my new goodies.

MY AMAZING CRAFT HAUL

I decided to to shop for fabric today but look what I came home with instead!!! I had a rewards card from our Ace Hardware store where I usually look for quilt fabric on sale. Nothing caught my eye until I walked passed a display that had all these goodies....on clearance!!! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw these Nesties marked down to $3.00 each and, of course, I just had to have them all....and then there was Tim Holtz goodies (including his new kraft glassine paper that I've been wanting to try....and then Scor-tape and Scor-pal goodies...but wait...there was also an Ott-Lite Craft Caddy lamp for $10.00..and some buttons...Oh My!!! The retail price of all this yummy craft goodness is $265.26 (before tax); however, after subtracting my $20.00 rewards card, I paid a grand total of.... (drum roll please........ LOL...............$41.80 cha-ching!!!!! Can't wait to start playing with all my new goodies!!!

I'm finally back to papercrafting (been playing lots of golf and working on my very first 'real' quilt) with a birthday card I created (with no one in mind...just to have on hand). I just received an order I placed with Sizzix.com for some (okay..nine he he) new dies they had on sale. I really like this decorative doily and just had to order it... especially since it was marked down to $3.99!!!! All the little hearts that are punched out can be used for other projects (I added three on the inside of the card). I made the little yo-yo with my new Clover "Quick" Yo-Yo Maker (large); a scrap of red fabric with white hearts then added a white button with some red embroidery floss to the center. This was a quick and easy-to-make card. Other products used: kraft cs, dp from Cosmo Cricket, red cs from SU run through the Cuttlebug with Swiss Dots embossing folder, sentiment and heart stamps from PTI, Memento Lady Bug ink.

QUILTED SNACK MATS

Those who follow my blog know that I started learning how to quilt this year and really, really enjoy it. I check out many tutorial sites and one of my favorites is Missouri Star Quilt Co. Not only do they have lots of fun, and easy to follow, tutorials, but also a great online shop that I have purchased from a number of times. Since I had some leftover fabric from some placemats I made (you can see them here); I decided it would be fun to try making some pinwheels by following one of the tutorials.....sew, sew easy and fun to do!!I used the envelope technique for assembling and stitch in the ditch method for quilting to turn them into snack sized placemats to use when in my craft room, sewing room or just watching tv...they are just the right size to hold a glass or mug plus a small plate or bowl of munchies.

A SIMPLE 'THANK YOU' CARD

My dear hubby just celebrated a 'big' birthday and our dear friends invited us over for a special birthday dinner (yummy barbequed baby back ribs, tasty shrimp, avocado and tomato salad, potatoes and my dh's favorite dessert....strawberry shortcake....delicious!!!!!). They even had a special centerpiece for the table and balloons!!! We had a great time and, so of course, I wanted to make a special 'thank you' card for them from my dh. Since it was going to be from a man, I wanted it to have a more masculine feel so I ran SU blue cardstock through my cuttlebug with the 'thanks' embossing folder; dry brushed on some white paint to bring out all the ways to say 'thank you' and added some twine in two colors along with a white button....no bling on this one (and it was by far the easiest and quickest card I have every made)!!!! He really liked how it came out....now all that's left to do is give it to them (that's tomorrow when we all play a round of golf together).

HALLOWEEN TABLE RUNNER

Yes, I know, it's a bit early to be thinking about Halloween (and what's funny is I'm not really a big fan of the holiday but I do love to decorate for it...go figure!?)....but, I just couldn't wait to turn the panel I purchased into a runner. I cut apart the main designs and added fabric strips in between each one and I saved one to use as part of the backing. It's sewn using the quilt-as-you-go method. Then I used metallic thread on top to 'quilt' around the witches' hats and shoes and also around the candy apples (you can see the quilting in the second picture). This gives it a bit of 'bling' which, unfortunately, doesn't show up in the pictures but looks great in real life LOL! When I get the chance, I plan on using my I-rock to add some additional bling. (not tomorrow, however, since we have a golf game planned with friends and b-day celebration for my dear hubby).

This is the fourth (and final) 'thank you' card I created for family and friends after our recent visit. I couldn't wait to, once again, use my new PTI Everyday Button Bits stamp set. If you haven't seen this set, it is one of several that was created so you can add buttons as accents to the stamped image. I decided to try something a little different though and used a round stamp from my Flower Fusion #5 stamp set in place of buttons to look more like 'cherries' than buttons would. I stamped the 'cherries' twice after inking to get the dark and light effect. I used my Nesties Classic Scallop Circles Small die and white cs and inked around the edges with the Bundled Sage. I added Glossy Accents onto the dark red cherries to give them some extra dimension (see the closeup pic). I'm entering this into the Paper Issues Challenge "Life is Sweet".

This is the third 'thank you' card for family and friends. Once again I used one of my newest PTI stamp sets, Everyday Button Bits, (it's not one of the latest releases, but I've been wanting this one for a long time and decided to finally order it....I'm so happy I did!). I used my PTI large scallop border die to create the edge and the Mat Stack 1 die for the stamped layer. The clouds are from my collection of original Sizzix dies. Other supplies used: kraft cs; Jenni Bowlin Studio dp; PTI Spring Rain ink; Sizzix Big Kick; Buttons Galore; Memento Paris Dusk die ink; MS glitter inside button holes; Taylored Expressions (inside sentiment).

HITTING OVER THE LAVA FIELD

As I posted recently, I have recently taken up the game of golf. I was asked how I was enjoying it and I have to say I really love playing..even with a few sore muscles afterwards!! And, I am so excited because I got my first 'Par' on the hole shown in the picture above. Yes, this course plays through a lava field (caused by a volcano about 10,000 years ago) and I had to hit over these scary black rocks...approximately 110 yards to the green (click on the pic to see it larger)!!!! We played it again today and I made it over again...woo hoo!!!

This is the second 'thank you' card I made for family and friends. I, once again, used my new PTI Mendi Medallian Stamp set...this time to create my own design paper using white cs and TH Distress inks. I used the largest stamp and the Limitless Layers die to create a whole different look with that stamp and two smaller ones for the top layer....love this new set!! The 'dot' from the Flower Fusion #3 set was used on the Nesties layer with Wild Honey ink to help 'pop' that layer and ground the others against the patterned background. I chose my colors for this card first and then, when looking for some ribbon, found that this shabby wrinkled ribbon was the 'perfect' match with the Wild Honey ink....love when that happens!

If anyone is wondering how and where I used the PTI Sweet Baby stamp and die set.....it's the solid Wild Honey color 'flower' layer..I realized that the 'lion's head' stamp and die in this set would be a perfect layer for the Flower Fusion#5 flower stamp and die. The #5 flower die covers the cute 'face' of the lion and only shows the 'mane'. (I used this same layering trick on my previous 'Thank You' card.)

I'M BACK WITH BIRTHDAY WISHES FOR MY DAUGHTER!!!

My hubby and I just returned from a visit back East to see family and friends. Had a wonderful time (except for the car accident....good thing the woman who hit us decided to try and go between our rental car and the car in the slow lane rather than slam into the back of us...she finally stopped more than a car length in front of us....afraid to think what would have happened to us otherwise...very thankful no one was hurt...only the cars!!!).

Now that we're safely back in our home, I decided to get to work on the cards I will need for birthdays and anniversaries that are coming up. When I had to choose the papers for my daughter's birthday card, I went right to my Basic Grey Olivia mini stack. I love the colors and the patterns are just so much fun...just like my daughter!!! How cute are the little animals (especially the bunny) hiding behind the flowers and leaves! When I purchased that pretty pink crocheted ribbon (Laundry Line) it was with my daughter in mind and I'm so happy that it was perfect for her card. The sentiment and banner are from Taylored Expressions and the brads are part of the BG Olivia collection. I blended two Copic markers to get the shade of pink I wanted on the banner. Other supplies used: SU white cs; inside sentiment All Night Media; MS eyelet lace edge punch and Memento dye ink.

FLOWERS IN VASES CARD

When looking through my stamp sets, I came across one that reminded me of one of the just released PTI stamp sets with vases so I decided to play around with it. I stamped the vases onto plain white cs and then stamped designs onto each one with two stamps that hadn't seen ink in a very long time. I used Glossy Accents on the designs (sprinkled some MS glitter onto the dark pink one) and set them aside to dry. The card base is white cs and I added some strips of dp from Basic Grey including one piece I punched with the MS doily lace trim deep edge punch. I also fussy punched three little flowers from this dp with, yet again, a punch I've owned forever. The vases were adhered to the card front with the dark pink being raised up with SU dimensionals. I then drew stems with a Zig marker, adhered the small flowers, added some tiny pearl rhinestones and a button. I decided not to add a sentiment to the front; in part because I really like how it looks without one and also because I'm not sure if this will be a birthday or anniversary card.

BIRTHDAY FUN - BICYCLES & BALLOONS

This birthday card was made using two stamps from the Unity February 2011 KOTM. I've been meaning to use them and just never got around to it until today. I wanted to keep the card very clean and simple so I started with a white cs base and used dp from Cosmo Cricket and SU red cs . I stamped the image and sentiment with PTI Fresh Snow and then embossed it with Ultra Detail white opaque embossing powder. The image was cut out with my Nestabilities Large Deckled Rectangle and I used a SU oval punch for the sentiment. The only embellishment is red and white twine. I'm entering this into this month's Unity Stamp Co. Challenge "Sun and Fun" because bicycles bring back memories of riding, racing and summer fun (with the occasional scraped knees when hitting that patch of gravel-ouch!!).

Checked on the hummingbird nest and, yes, there are two little babies!!! We saw the two of them but I was only able to get this one in the picture. Can you believe how much bigger the beak is already? They are also much fluffier than just a day ago.

(First, please forgive the poor lighting and quality of my photos...once I get my laptop back I can go back to using Photoshop and not the Paint program on my netbook). I set a goal for myself to make birthday and anniversary cards way in advance of when I actually need them and this card is for a dear friend whose birthday is not until mid-August...two months early...woo hoo!! My blog friend, Lynn, had a link to a tutorial to create your own canvas fabric using design paper (thanks Lynn for the link and you just have to check out the beautiful project she created!). I love the Cosmo Cricket Material Girl mini stack and decided it would be perfect to use for this. I already owned (and never used..bad me LOL) Ranger sticky back canvas and claudine hellmuth multi-medium. This process is messy...but I love the result with the green and white gingham paper turned into 'fabric'. I also got to use my late mother-in-law's very old pinking shears (which I know would have made her very happy); along with the PTI 'button card' that I stamped about a month ago and was just waiting to be used. We checked the hummingbird nest this morning and look what we found...the baby (or possibly two...can't tell for sure but it looks like a second is on the right!!! CHRISTMAS IN 'JUNE'

The Christmas placemats I have been working on are finally finished...some golf, sightseeing and playtime at the casino interrupted the progress...had lots of fun (and won...woo hoo!!) so well worth the delay ;)

The pattern I used is called Set a Pretty Table by Annie and used a product called ByAnnie's Soft and Stable instead of batting (you can read more about it on her site). It uses strips from one jellyroll (with lots left for other projects) with your choice of backing fabric. I purchased yardage from the same line called Fruitcake by Moda. You quilt your strips directly on top of the Soft and Stable and when the backing is sewn on you fold over the edges to create the binding. As you can see, I chose to do two with more red fabrics and the other two with more of the brown fabrics but kept the centers the same. Now I just have to decide what I'm going to work on next....perhaps something for Halloween :) ....love this new hobby!!!!

QUILTED COASTERS AND FABRIC CADDY SET

I couldn't wait to try making this coaster and matching caddy set when I saw it in the Summer 2011 issue of Quilts and more magazine. The fabric matches the placemats I previously posted about as you can see in the pics ..sorry about the reflections, but it's not easy taking a pic on a glass top table :) My favorite coaster is the one with the little owl in the top pic and I absolutely love the caddy with the prairie points (and that little green flower shaped button, on top of the round yellow one, I sewed to the center point matches perfectly and added just the right touch!!!). I can see myself making more for different holidays and gifts. Speaking of holidays, I'm now working on Christmas placemats which I'm hoping I'll finish this week. Our former neighbor, and good friend, is going to be turning 8 years old (oh my, how time does fly....seems like just yesterday he was a baby!). My hubby and I got him interested in 'rock hounding' and everytime we'd go on an adventure in our rv or Jeep we'd bring him back some new rocks for his collection. Last year my dear hubby made him memorize what each rock was before he'd give him a new one the next day....let's just say that remembering 'septarian nodule' was not easy for a 7 year old...but he did it and rang our bell very early in the morning and frantically said... "I didn't sleep at all last night!!!"... because he didn't want to miss getting the next rock he kept repeating 'septarian nodule', 'septarian nodule'....toooooo funny!!! We usually go rock hounding when we're out in our Jeep so that is what inspired this birthday card for our little friend. A fun touch is the Wobbles I used under the Jeep which makes it look like it's rock climbing (and yes, we sometimes have to do that to get to a good rock hounding site). I've attached a video showing it in action...my first attempt at doing a video for my blog! The septarian nodule can be seen to the right of the card in the first picture; the others are from many different adventures. I love hummingbirds and when my hubby told me one built a nest in the bush on the side of our house I just had to try and get a picture (or two or three LOL!!) It wasn't real easy since 'mama hummingbird' wasn't thrilled that we were nearby. She kept flying around to try and distract us. Once my hubby left, I stayed where I was and didn't move. What luck!! She returned and sat on the nest and I was able to get some great shots!! There is one teeny tiny egg in that teeny tiny nest...hopefully I will be able to get some pics once the egg hatches!

Sorry that I have been MIA this past week but my laptop decided to die on me ..HP thought it was the hard drive and shipped us a new one, however, that wasn't the cause and now the laptop has to be shipped back to them so they can figure out what is wrong. MINI EASEL CARD FOR CR84FN29 CHALLENGE

This week's color challenge at CR84FN is to use the color combo of light plum, plum and kraft as the main colors in your project. I really like this color combo, so I just had to play along (and thanks to my blog friend, Lynn, for posting her beautiful entry and letting us know about the challenge). I made a 3 inch by 3inch easel card using kraft cs as a base and the light plum and plum cs for my flowers, scallop and butterfly (this keeps the easel card opened as seen in pic). I purchased a tumbler template and decided to try my hand at creating some quilted placemats with it. I also made some matching coasters (sorry, they are not in this pic). I think this is going to become a favorite template...it is soooo easy to use. Was undecided at first whether to square these off but decided to play around; and, with some careful cutting of the backing fabric and batting they came together quite easily.

'SEW' SWEET OF YOU

Thanks again to my blogging friend, Lynn, for letting everyone know that The Craft's Meow is sponsoring a technique challenge at Lily Pad Cards to use embossing (heat embossing, dry embossing or both) on a card. I couldn't wait to use my new Sew Cute stamps from my little shoebox once again. So, I pulled out my heat gun and some Detail Brass embossing powder I have had forever along with my TH clear embossing ink and stamped the thread spool and one of the flower button stamps onto my kraft cs card base. To create the large flower, I used the Nestabilities Blossom die to cut one flower from a lighter shade of kraft cs (I dry embossed that with my Cuttlebug and the Swiss Dots embossing folder); and a smaller flower with dp from Cosmo Cricket's Material Girl mini deck. I created my own muslim flower that I sprayed with Glimmer Mist and added a small fabric flower with brad on top (got this one at a quilt show on a business card and just had to repurpose it). Some light green rhinestones were added to the flower for some extra bling. I used my scallop edge trimmer on two more pieces of Material Girl dp to add under the flower. I didn't stamp a sentiment since I haven't decided who is going to be getting this card or for what occasion. What a fun challenge..reminded me to get out my heat gun and my embossing powders that have been sitting in a drawer way too long!

MADE WITH LOVE

Did you ever purchase stamps etc and just never get around to using them? I decided it was time to use my newest PTI stamps Flower Fusion #3 (and die) and one I just got from my little shoebox (called Sew Cute). Rather than stamping the flowers onto cardstock, I chose to use TH Distress inks in Fired Brick and Forest Moss on muslin. I die cut some flowers, stamped them and then stamped a small piece of muslin to add to the sewing machine. After I stamped the sentiment onto kraft cs, I trimmed around the edges with my deckle scissors (remember those?!) and used Memento Rich Cocoa ink to give it a distressed look. I am so happy with the result. The sewing machine, sentiment and 'stitches' are from the Sew Cute set and now that I am quilting I can see using these alot! The card base is kraft cs and the dp is from Cosmo Cricket (Material Girl). If you look close, the PTI flowers look like those on the dp. I added some Glossy Accents to the center of the flowers, the dials and thread on the sewing machine to give a little sparkle. Other supplies used: scallop edge punch and SU dimensionals. I'm entering this into this week's challenge at Cute Card Thursday Challenge #164 which is to feature some distressing on your project.

OFF-ROAD ADVENTURE PICTURES

As promised, here are some of the pictures I took on our trip out to Moab, Utah and Monument Valley. The scenery is breathtaking (and somewhat scary to get to at times, but well worth it!!!). The first three pictures I took at a place called Antelope Canyon. It's on Native American land and you pay to be driven out through extremely deep sand in a wash to the opening and then get to walk through the slot canyon. I did not adjust any of the colors or lighting in my pictures. A beautiful place that we plan on returning to. (You can click on all of the pics to make them larger)

It was a 5 mile roundtrip hike up a 350 foot incline, including criss-crossing a stream a number of times and up and down rocks and sand to see this site.

We drove for miles and miles on this trail, up and down slick rock, loose rocks and sand to get to the overlook below. Great place for having lunch and enjoying the view.

While on one of our off-road Jeep adventures with good friends yesterday in Moab, UT we stopped to look at this old engine block. Suddenly, this colorful guy jumped up and stayed right where you see him...even when we got close and took pics. Can't wait to find out what kind this is since we have never seen one like it before. To see him close-up just click on the picture. UPDATE: Found out that this is a Yellow-headed Collared Lizard, Crotaphytus collaris auriceps, found in the Four Corners Region of Utah and Colorado.

A RAG QUILT FOR OUR RV

Those that follow my blog know that my hubby and I have a small rv (Roadtrek) that we love to take on adventures all over the country. In a previous post I showed the flannel pillowcases I made with a camping design and said I was going to make a rag quilt to go with them. After drawing a number of different layouts on graph paper I decided I would go with this (the top row that is hidden is the same as the bottom row) and just love how it came out. We can't wait to get back 'on the road again' and now we'll have this fun quilt to curl up under if the evening temps drop.

BAPTISM CARD

A good friend asked me to make two baptism cards (both for boys) and, of course, I said I would (the cards are identical so I'm only showing one). I used my Cricut Expression and CDS, along with the Easter 2010 cartridge (cross) and Lacy Labels Lite cartridge (layered labels). After cutting the top layer of the cross, I used Ranger embossing ink and silver embossing powder. I repeated the same process again to get a nice coating of the silver onto the small detail areas. The cross shadow layer, as well as the large white label were run through the Cuttlebug with the Swiss Dots embossing folder. The sentiment is from Taylored Expressions and was stamped with Starlite Silver Dew Drop Brilliance pigment ink. I kept the inside simple, with another white embossed label layered under a blue label to match the front of the card. This way my friend could write a personal note to the parents.

95...OH MY!!!

My hubby's aunt is going to be 95 years old this month (WOW!...I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to reach that milestone!!!) She loves getting my handmade cards and so I decided to create one with her age blinged up with Stickles and on the flower centers (if you click on the picture you can see the glitter). Since her vision is not great I printed the Happy Birthday from my computer (I don't have a stamp that large) and I wanted her to be able to read it easily. The number is from the Cricut Winter Woodland cartridge; card base is teal cs and dp is from Basic Grey Curio stack (I chose these colors because they are her favorite). I'm entering this into The Paper Variety It's All In The Numbers Challenge, which is to use a number on your project.

A SIGN OF SPRING

When I think of the official start of Spring, I associate it with seeing the first robin to arrive back in town...that was the inspiration for this project. The Spring wall hanging you see above was created as one of my Design Team projects for Custom Crops. I used an older Cricut cartridge ,Winter Woodland, to create my 'robin' and to show that this cartridge is not just for creating projects for the Winter or Christmas. Unity Stamp Company is having a new monthly challenge to make a card or other stamped project incorporating a bird or birds. The bird stamp (I stamped three times onto kraft cs to make it more dimensional and once directly onto the card so the little feet would show. I colored the eyes with my white Signo pen then applied Glossy Accents to give them dimension) and the sentiment stamp are from DeLovely Whimsy and the flower stamp that I used as a 'tree branch' is from Insightful Meadows. Other supplies used: kraft cs; SU white cs and dimensionals; Memento Rich Cocoa dye ink; twine and button from stash; Corner Chomper, Signo white pigment pen and Inkssentials Glossy Accents.

I'm also entering this card into the ATU#28 Challenge which is to add buttons to your Unity and Ippity creations. I chose that oval button because it reminded me of the little owl's eyes.

FLANNEL CAMPING PILLOWCASES

For those of you who follow my blog (and I thank you so much for taking the time to do so...it really means a lot to me!!!!) know that I have started learning to quilt and sew. My good friend and quilting mentor, Betty, created her own way of making really cute pillowcases (no seams showing in the opening) and taught me how to do this. The bottom photo shows a closeup of the decorative stitch I used along the trim. My hubby and I have a small rv and I thought it would be fun to make some with a 'camping' design. The fabrics I used are flannel and I enjoyed working with them....so I ordered enough to make a small rag quilt to go with the pillowcases...yet another project to work on!!! That includes a papercrafting project I just finished for Custom Crops that will be coming real soon (and it will have a free .cut file available).

HALLOWEEN IN APRIL

I know it's April and everyone is working on projects for Easter, however, I couldn't wait to try out this modified quilt-as-you-go technique with a product called Soft and Stable and all the fun Halloween fabrics I purchased on sale (love 'off-season' bargains!!!). The colors in the pics are not as true as in 'real life' (the purples and green are deeper shades than as shown). I love how they look on my dining room table!!! They were definitely worth all the work and I can't wait to get started on some for everyday. (I do promise, however, to do some papercrafting this week as well LOL!).

TOROWEAP & NAMPAWEAP (GRAND CANYON)

Last Friday my husband and I, along with 3 other couples, went on an 'off-roading' adventure with our Jeeps to the Toroweap overlook of the Grand Canyon. It's approximately 120 miles round trip once we finally arrived at the entrance to the dirt road (the last five miles alone takes about 45 minutes since you are literally climbing over rocks with your vehicle) but, oh is it worth it to see this view (3000 vertical feet above the Colorado River)!!!! ...you can click on the picture to see it larger. We also took a couple of small hikes and then continued on another dirt road (and hike) to see the petroglyphs at Nampaweap. These are just two of the pics I took and wanted to share....hope you like!
